Double Clutch by Liz Reinhardt

Double Clutch (Brenna Blixen #1)
by Liz Reinhardt

amazon kindle - £2.59/$3.99

Book Description

What happens when you fall in love with the perfect guy... twice... in one day?

Brenna Blixen spent her freshman year homeschooling in Denmark; now that she’s back in the States, she’s determined to make her sophomore year unforgettable. And by unforgettable, she imagined awesome classes, fun friendships, and maybe a little romance.

What she got was a whole lot of romance, and all at once.

The same day that dark, brooding Saxon Maclean charmed her with his killer good looks and whip-smart wit, Jake Kelly stole her breath away with his heart-wrenching smile and intelligent, thoughtful focus.

But Saxon is a proud player who makes it clear that he doesn’t know why he can’t get Brenna off of his mind and out of his system, and Jake’s sweet and humble attitude hides a secret past life that might be more darker and more complex than Brenna’s willing to handle.

Complicating the matter is the fact that Saxon and Jake were once best friends and are now arch-enemies... and the more Brenna finds out about their connection to each other, the more intrigued and worried she becomes.

Between keeping the peace with her lovingly over-protective parents, designing t-shirts for her high school’s rising punk band, keeping up her grades in both academic and technical high school, and running the track like a maniac, Brenna has enough to worry about with out juggling two guys who make her heart thud and drive her crazy all at once.

She has to make a choice. But how can she when giving her heart to one of them might mean breaking the other’s?

(Cover Design: Steven Peterson)

Recommended Age: Older YA

My Thoughts

A seriously addictive read, Double Clutch is narrated by the likeable, forthright Brenna Blixen as she shares her return to American high school after a year abroad. With beautifully smooth prose and realistic dialogue, Reinhardt has created one of my favourite ya contemporary reads yet. This is no simpering, run-of-the-mill love triangle. Real issues, deep, past hurts and impossible secrets all contribute to the tangle Brenna ends up in as she takes her steps into first love. I couldn't help but admire and like Brenna - her disappointments and vulnerabilities made it easy to relate to her and her gutsy bluntness, honesty and wit made her stand out in a genre swamped with shy heroines. Yes, she makes mistakes but that only makes her human... and a teenager. As for the two heroes, Jake and Saxon... I started out truly torn over these two incredibly likeable characters - one so open, kind and loyal, the other so charming and suave. However, I've finished book one firmly on one hero's team. It was difficult though, because Reinhardt does an excellent job of making her characters so three-dimensional you can't help but root for them all.
I really loved this read. It took me away somewhere else for a while which is the best kind of book.
So eager to read book two I'm off to download it right away!

The Changelings (War of the Fae #1) by Elle Casey

I haven't done a book recommendation in a while, have I? Well, this week, whenever I could squeeze in half-an-hour away from the Borrowed Ember manuscript, I was reading the awesome Elle Casey's first book in her War of the Fae series...

The Changelings (War of the Fae #1)
by Elle Casey

Kindle Edition - £3.19/$4.99

Book Description

Jayne Sparks, a potty-mouthed, rebellious seventeen-year-old and her best friend, shy and bookish Tony Green, have a pretty typical high school existence, until several seemingly unrelated incidents converge, causing a cascade of events that change their lives forever. Jayne and Tony, together with a group of runaway teens, are hijacked and sent into a forest, where nothing and no one are as they seem. Who will emerge triumphant? And what will they be when they do?

My Thoughts

I was literally laughing out loud from the get-go with this book. Narrator and heroine, Jayne Sparks, has bags of personality. She’s a funny, twisted, loyal, brave, snarky, teenager always handy with the quick quips, curse words and some turns of phrase I will definitely be adopting. Jayne drew me into the story, and then the friendship between her and Tony led me further down the path, until I eventually hit the crux of the story. From there on I was beguiled by the magic, the action, the darkness that is often balanced out by Jayne’s sense of levity, and of course the awesome relationships between the group of runaways. From middle to end, Elle Casey takes the reader on a pure fantasy adventure filled with all manner of forest creatures, paranormal beings and fairy tale monsters. My favourite part of the whole story is when Jayne discovers the tree hugging. If you’ve read the book you’ll know what I’m talking about. I had a stupid-ass grin on my face through the entire scene, it was so charmingly funny.
Anyhoo, a fantastic start to a truly magical adventure with a truly unique and three dimensional heroine! Can’t wait to read book two!

Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3) - Teaser #6

Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3)
Teaser

“You okay?” Jai asked softly, his brows drawn together in concern.

Ari swallowed down vomit and smiled weakly. “Just peachy.”
“You made it,” The Red King’s voice brought her head up and Ari stared across the length of a practically empty warehouse to see Red striding towards her with *BLEEP* at his side. *BLEEP* looked refreshed and eager. She hated him for that, knowing she looked like she’d just given three pints of blood.
“Where are we exactly?” Ari asked, brushing dust off her knees.
“A studio warehouse. TV.” The Jinn King grinned. “It’s got state-of-the-art soundproofing.”
“Oh gee, you think of everything.”
Red eyed her. “Still not used to the Peripatos, huh?”
“Was it the hair that gave it away?”  Ari asked sarcastically.

*BLEEP* <--- A teaser within a teaser! Muhahahah! :-p

Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3) - Teaser #5

Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3)
Teaser
" Sliding her arms around his waist and sinking into his embrace as his own arms wrapped around her shoulders, Ari nodded. “Yeah. I don’t want to feel that way again. Or have you feel that way about me again.”
Shoving her gently back, Jai frowned at her. “Feel what way?”
“You were… mad. Disappointed.”
“No. I was upset. I don’t like feeling helpless, and not knowing how to help you makes me feel like crap.”
“Really?” Ari asked doubtfully. “Cause, you kind of had your scary, don’t talk to me, don’t even look at me, thing going on when it happened.”
“That’s my helpless face.”
“Oh. It looks a lot like rage.”
“Yeah, I only have three expressions. Blank. Pissed off. And polite boredom.”

Ari laughed and he smiled softly at her. Self-deprecation was something she hadn’t seen on him before. She liked that she was beginning to see a side of him she suspected only Trey knew existed. "

Warriors of Ankh head to Turkey!

A few months ago I sold Warriors of Ankh Turkish language rights to publisher Marti Yayinlari! Still very much in the early stages but I'm looking forward to seeing the final product and am pretty excited that my novels will be sold in a foreign country :-)

I'll keep you updated as things progress.

I'd like to re-emphasise how happy I am as a self-published writer. The only reason I chose to sell in this case was because it was a Foreign Rights deal in a market that I otherwise had no reach in.

Anyhoo...

Borrowed Ember Book Trailer

Hi folks!
Sorry for cutting into Warriors of Ankh week but I'm eager to share the Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3) book description and Book Trailer...

Borrowed Ember (Fire Spirits #3)

Everything in Ari’s life until this point has been borrowed.
Her human life with a man who wasn't her real father.
A love for a boy who needed more than her to be strong.
Kisses with a Jinn who refused to do anything but lend them out in moments of weakness.
And even her resolve, which seemed to fail her whenever she needed it most.

But Ari is done borrowing. She finally feels strong enough to make hunting Jinn not just a hobby to get her through her dismal situation, but to make hunting a permanent and necessary career.  Her friendship with Charlie might finally make it onto real and steady ground if only she can save him from the trial on Mount Qaf. And her love for Jai could be eternal, if only she could gain control over the darkness of the Seal within her.

Ari believes all of this is doable. That finally she will truly own the relationships in her life and to a certain extent have ownership over her future.

But none of that matters when it isn't up to her…

…For high in the emerald mountains of Mount Qaf, the Sultan Azazil has been keeping secrets.
Even from the Jinn Kings.
Secrets that will change everything… and bring Ari to the crashing realization that once again…

… she’s borrowed something that will never truly belong to her.

Something that is desperate to be unleashed.
Something that could destroy them all.

My fault but I forgot to put in the details for this giveaway that it was only one entry per person! I had one very enthusiastic and eager reader enter 400 times! Moon Matched - a very premature sneak peek!

Okay, I have something a little special for you. In honour of the last day of The Tale of Lunarmorte week in my May Mini-Madness Giveaways, I'm sharing very premature and rough first copy edit teasers from Moon Matched. Moon Matched is the prequel novella to the spin-off series Lunarmorte Repercussions and will be released within the title 'Phantasmagoria and Other Stories' next year.

Here's the blurb and a tiny excerpt...

Mackenzie MacLachlan knows what it’s like to live in the shadow of greatness. Not only is she the youngest daughter of the respected Alpha of Pack MacLachlan, but the baby sister of Phoebe, The United Council of Supernaturals’ greatest Hunter and close, personal friend to Caia Ribeiro. Like most girls, Mac wants to be like her heroine of a big sister – a kick-ass, renowned Hunter. But her dad has other plans for her. Determined to keep their bloodline in leadership, her father is certain Mac is fated to mate with the next Alpha of the Pack. That means no action and no travelling the world enforcing the new laws. Instead she’ll be stuck in the same town she grew up in, mated to one of the young lykan males she has no time or patience for.

Quinton Sinclair also knows what it’s like to live in the shadow of greatness. His big brother, John, died a hero in the Great Battle for Concord. Quinn knows he can never live up to John’s legacy, especially when all he wants to do is head off to college and pursue his dream of becoming a writer. But with a father still grieving for his hero son, Quinn is finding it impossible to refuse his dad’s plans for him. He wants Quinn to be the next Alpha of Pack MacLachlan; even if it means dumping his human girlfriend to pursue the stuck up princess of The Pack, Mackenzie.

Adamant their judgemental assumptions of one another are correct, Mackenzie and Quinn have never seen eye to eye. But when Phoebe is kidnapped while on a top priority assignment and Mac takes off on her own, believing she alone can find her sister, Quinn follows her, determined to save the impetuous lykan from inevitable disaster. And perhaps, just maybe, as they tumble into a danger far bigger than two small town teens can handle, Mackenzie and Quinn will discover they have a lot more in common than just a pack name.

Excerpt...

Discrimination will not be tolerated under the laws of the United Council of Supernaturals. Any supernatural found guilty of persecuting another for reasons of race, sex, sexual orientation, social status, or age will be charged for violation against the Equality & Diversity Act (of the UCS).

A teaser from Mac's P.O.V.

“He’s gorgeous.” Rachel whined, pushing Jack out the way to slide in beside Mac and Jennifer. Jack grumbled but moved over to talk to the guys, used to his twin sister treating him like a pet dog.
Mac knew immediately Rachel was talking about Quinn. “I’m eating Rach. I’d prefer not to vomit it all back up, thank you very much.”
“You are so in denial.”
She snorted and glowered over at Quinn’s table again. He leaned back in his chair, grinning at something Kerr was saying, his arm draped around the back of Peighton DeLongpre’s chair. Peighton was just as golden as Quinn, with her blonde hair and gold and white cheerleading uniform. Peighton was grinning too, snuggling into Quinn’s side, basking in the warmth of her boyfriend’s glory.
Ugh, gag me, Mac sighed.
Quinn and Peighton had been dating for the last nine months and Mac still rolled her eyes every time she remembered the day she had heard Peighton talk on and on in the girl’s bathroom about how she was Quinn’s soul mate; and how she knew him better than anyone. Hah! She didn’t know his ass got even hairier twice a month when they went for pack runs now did she? Idiot child.
“I sort of hate him,” Mac reminded Rachel and ripped off another bite of her burger. She could tell Rachel didn’t believe her but Jen ducked her head to hide her face. Jen believed her - she just didn’t feel the same way about him. After all…he was Jen’s cousin.

***

A teaser from Quinn's P.O.V.

“Pack run tonight instead of Sunday. Devero can’t shield our activities then. The damn magik has a date on Sunday he can’t break and you know Alistair hates using magiks he doesn’t know. So Devero’s agreed to mask the run tonight.”
Quinn slumped in his seat. Great. “I have a date with Peighton tonight.”
He knew it was the wrong thing to say before he said it. His dad’s fork clattered to his plate and he glared at his son. “I thought I told you to break up with that girl already. You should be concentrating on Mackenzie.”
Mackenzie!
“Dad, Mackenzie hates me. Deal with it.” He didn’t add that he thought Mackenzie was a snotty, judgemental little princess. His dad would have smacked him up side of the head for disrespecting the Alpha’s daughter.
Isla reached over to touch his hand. “I’m sure that’s not true, but Rick,” she turned soothingly to her mate, “Quinn’s with Peighton. You can’t expect him to just dump her. They care about one another."
Rick turned his ferocious glare on her. “They have no future together.”
An infuriating feeling of impotence tightened Quinn's chest and the anger just blasted out of him. He threw back his chair, shoving his plate into all the other dishes on the table. With one last look of disgust thrown in his father’s direction, Quinn charged out of the room before he said or did something he’d regret.

Moon Spell Teaser

Teaser: Moon Spell (The Tale of Lunarmorte #1)
"  Lucien narrowed his eyes and cupped a large hand around the back of her neck, holding her imperceptibly tighter. She gulped.
“We don’t need you now we know which area she’s in. You’ve gotten us close enough to find her with this.” He tapped his nose with his other hand and then drew her closer as if for a kiss. “Good thing you destroyed your car so I wouldn’t have to confiscate the keys,” he whispered across her lips and she tried not to shiver in reaction.
And then she came back to herself.
Caia pushed him away, blushing furiously. Dominating asshat.
“I will never forgive you for this,” she whispered angrily. "
