As a fan of Hocking I'm looking forward to this one; it sounds a little different from her other works. Plus I love the beautiful cover art, created by Claudia McKinney, the cover artist for my own novel, Slumber.
A Monster Calls
by Patrick Ness, Siobhan Dowd
amazon - Hardback £6.69 May 5th 2011
The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do. But it isn’t the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming... The monster in his back garden, though, this monster is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth.
Costa Award winner Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final idea of much-loved Carnegie Medal winner Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel of coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults.

Patrick Ness is one of my favourite authors, perhaps even thee one, so I can't wait to get my hands on this one. Sounds brilliant.

One choice can transform you. Pass initiation. Do not fail…
Thrilling urban dystopian fiction debut from exciting young author.
Thrilling urban dystopian fiction debut from exciting young author.
In sixteen-year-old Beatrice Prior’s world, society is divided into five factions – Abnegation (the selfless), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent) – each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue, in the attempt to form a “perfect society.” At the age of sixteen, teens must choose the faction to which they will devote their lives.
On her Choosing Day, Beatrice renames herself Tris, rejects her family’s group, and chooses another faction. After surviving a brutal initiation, Tris finds romance with a super-hot boy, but also discovers unrest and growing conflict in their seemingly “perfect society.” To survive and save those they love, they must use their strengths to uncover the truths about their identities, their families, and the order of their society itself.

There are elements here that sound a bit like Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy; it will take a lot to be as good as Collins', but I think this sounds cool, and I like the cover - it stands out from the gothicism of YA covers at the moment.

Angel Kiss sounds a little different from other books in this genre, and the cover is different too. Hopefully this will be a refreshing read.
Graveminder
by Melissa Marr
amazon - Hardback May 17th 2011
Graveminder isn't YA but it's from the author of bestselling YA series Wicked Lovely, and I love how dark Melissa Marr can be in YA, so looking forward to her being able to stretch those macabre muscles in adult fiction. Really excited about this one.
